This is my first year at JKE and I was really pleased to find out that every year, the JKE community supports a few JKE families who are in need during the holiday season. The Giving Trees are up in the lobby of JKE and they are filled with various items that our families need. Each coloured tag represents a family in need who is grateful for whatever support our community can provide. I took a look this afternoon and many of the items being asked for are very humble. Donations are being accepted until December 15th. If you wish to contribute, come by and grab a tag (or a few) and bring back the new, unwrapped items and place them under a tree with the original tag attached. Classes at JKE are collecting the donations several times a day and sorting them so that the items go to the families who requested them. Also, the coin drive students are participating in this week benefits the same families. The money collected with be gathered and staff members from JKE will go shopping for bigger ticket items that the families are in need of such as microwaves. Wednesday, we are collecting quarters, Thursday is loonies and Friday, twoonies are being collected. Thank you to everyone who is able to contribute. Happy Holidays Mrs. Vieira

Mrs. Vieira Yesterday, we had a blast playing with the robots again with our little buddies. This time, we went into the gym and using different material, created mazes that we had to try and create a code to help our robots complete the maze. It was CHALLENGING! But also a lot of fun. There are so many skills being practiced during these times with our buddies: cooperation, leadership skills, coding skills, problem solving, and conflict resolution. I'm really proud of all these skills I see growing in Division 14 students.
Today was a really fun and exciting day for division 14: we got to visit Caine's Arcade! This was my first time seeing a Caine's arcade and i have to say, I was incredibly impressed! I thought we would be seeing games made in tiny shoe boxes or moving boxes. I was shocked at how elaborate the games were and how creative the student were in marketing for their audience. The students of division 14 had so much fun playing the different games and collecting tickets.
I hope that everyone had fun. Monday, Nov 20th

Mrs. Vieira New Art ProjectToday we started a new art project to explore the concept of symmetry. We are focusing on the concept of reflectional symmetry and are creating cities using two different mediums: construction paper and water colour paints. Today, we constructed our cityscapes with construction paper. We created the criteria together by examining the example I showed the class. And then the fun began. I am so impressed with the skill and complexity of the cities the students are creating. Caine`s ArcadeTomorrow we have the opportunity to participate in Caine's arcade. In the Week at a Glance, I included a link to the website explaining what this is.
Caine was a 9 year old boy who created an arcade made completely out of cardboard in his father's automotive shop in East LA. Unfortunately, he only had one customer. Fortunately, that one customer was a videographer, Nirvan, who made a video about Caine's arcade. When he discovered he was the only customer, he arranged for a large group to surprise Caine by playing in his arcade. He also set up a scholarship fund for Caine and once his video went viral, inspired thousands of children to create their own cardboard arcades. Our Caine's Arcade has been created by WGSS students, many who were students of JKE previously. Students are required to bring a $1 entrance fee and will enjoy 45 minutes of playing the various cardboard games. Hopefully this will inspire them to all the possibilities they can achieve with some determination and courage. Week at a Glance will be sent home tomorrow. Have a great night. Mrs. Vieira We had a very, very busy day today in Division 14. Today, student got a change to explore technology on many levels. After lunch today, our students were given the task of becoming the teachers for their little buddies. Last week, you may recall, that students were introduced to the robot Dash. Today, half of the class taught their little buddies how to operate Dash while the other half taught their buddies how to operate a different robot: BeeBot. Once all students have be introduced to both robots, students will be given the task of creating mazes that they will have to program their robots through. Not only is it an exciting, engaging activity for our students, but it's giving them a leadership role with their little buddies. I'm happy to say that most of our students are showing EXCEPTIONAL leadership skills with their little buddies. I'm very proud of them. After buddies, we went back to our own classroom and worked on adding more to our myBlueprint portfolios. Students learned how to add photos and were given the task to add a photo of something they are proud of and to describe why they are proud of it. Then, students were asked to take the information we learned yesterday from taking our learning style survey to add a box that discusses how they like to learn. This is an important piece of knowledge for students to know about themselves. Do they learn best by watching someone do it first? Do they learn best by reading instructions quietly? Do they learn best by listening to someone give the instructions? Be sure to check out your child's myBlueprint profile by clicking the following LINK. All students have the same login ID's and their individual passwords can be found inside their red planners, which we also updated with important information today. Have a great extra long weekend. See you next week.

Suggested that students bring $1 to donate. Have a great week. Mrs. Vieira Today was our Remembrance Day assembly at JKE and it was a lovely moment to stop and remember how grateful we are to live in a generally peaceful place like Canada. We are able to enjoy our liberties and freedom because of the people who have come before us and have fought for us. We are very grateful. Division 14 put together a lovely wreath which Nicholas and Sophia presented during the assembly. Students made two types of poppies: one with word art and one using pointillism techniques. For a further description of the art, check out the "Art Work" page at the top of the blog or click HERE. In other news, Division 14 students are enjoying many of the activities that we are doing in class. Mrs. Anderson is leading the students through an ecosystem unit in Science, we have done some compare/contrast writing comparing Fantastic Mr. Fox movie and book, and today, students completed a simplified learning profiles survey to examine what kind of learning style they favour: visual, auditory or kinaesthetic. We will be examining these learning styles in more depth on our myBlueprint pages. Don't forget to keep checking in on those. Throughout the school year, students will be adding pictures of assignments, reflections and building a learning profile that helps them recognize their strengths and areas for improvement.
Don't forget that there is no school on Friday or Monday so our spelling test will be tomorrow. Have a great evening. Mrs. Vieira Monday, Nov 6th
