Mrs. Vieira It's not all hard work in Division 14. Sometimes we carve out some time for fun. Yesterday was one of those times. We got together with our buddies and made gingerbread houses! First, our class constructed the houses ahead of time to let them have time to dry and become a bit more solid. Then we went to our buddies classroom and had a great time decorating. And of course, we didn't eat ANY of the candy (just kidding, we totally ate some candy while building). It was so much fun and very, very yummy. In other news, I wanted to share some photos of the Science projects that the students recently completed. I can not take any credit for these; they were done with Mrs. Anderson. Students have been learning about ecosystems and the transference of energy through a food chain. They had to research an ecosystem and build a diorama to show how the energy is transferred through animals in that ecosystem. But they turned out beautifully so I wanted to share them online. Also, make sure you visit the Art Work gallery to see pictures of our latest masterpieces: Cities of Symmetry. :)
Have a great weekend, Mrs. Vieira I’m very sorry for the lateness of the week at a glance. A stomach bug has been making it’s way through my household and it’s been a rough week. Thursday, Dec 14th - PE. Please wear gym shoes - Building Gingerbread houses with our little buddies - PAC snack day. $1 chips and candy bars being sold after school Friday, Dec 15th - No Spelling test this week due to Mrs. Vieira being sick - Math Quiz - Spirit Day: dress in red and green - Literature circle meeting: Mummies in the Morning Thanks so much for your patience, Mrs. Vieira They next time your dropping or picking up your Division 14 student, check out the new poster on our door. Division 14 is starting a kilometre club for our classroom! I've done with many of my other classes and I think Division 14 students will enjoy this.
Now that the yucky November weather is over, every Tuesday we will be heading outside near the end of the day to see how much we can run. We will run as long as it is safe to do so, even if it's raining a bit. Students run laps around the grade 6/7 field and collect popsicle sticks for each lap. At the end of the time, I record the number of laps students ran and we keep track on the poster on our classroom door. Notice that we keep track in increments of 5 kilometres. Keeping track of every kilometre would be WAY too much work. As soon as students have ran 5 kms, they get a checkmark next to their name. Many of the students are excited and inspired by the challenge of running for as long as they can. We talked about you can walk if you have to, but the point is 1) to keep moving forward and 2) do the best you can. We look forward to seeing how many kilometres students can run by the end the year (the record is 130km!) The day we have been waiting for finally arrived: the Aboriginal beading workshop! Ms. Pamela first taught us the history of beads and what kinds of materials that different Aboriginal groups use to make their beads from. This is something Division 14 students had been learning about during their S.S. inquiry project so they had a lot of information to share. It made this teacher very proud. :) Then the students and their little buddies got to choose the different beads that they wanted to make their necklaces from. The students were very excited to learn that they would be practicing their symmetry skills while building their necklaces. They got to choose a pendent with an aboriginal animal on it and designed their necklaces before stringing them onto a curved piece of wire. Not only did they enjoy this activity, they were encouraged to help their little buddies with their necklaces. I was extremely proud of some of our students for the level of leadership they displayed in helping their little buddies complete their necklaces. They are quite the wonderful group of students. Everyone was very pleased and happy with their necklaces and I think they turned out great. I'm sure many of you got to see them at home.
