Today was a busy day in Division 14. We started two large projects today: one in Social Studies and one in Career Education. First, our Social Studies project is an inquiry project learning about different Aboriginal cultures in Canada. Students were put into partners and assigned a particular culture to research and create a poster presentation about. There are many skills that students will practice with this project: team work, note-taking, presentation skills, summarizing, reading and writing skills. This project will also align with the new core concepts in the new B.C. curriculum by having student engaging in self-assessment throughout the process. Check out the link below to see a sample of the package students are working with. This project is expected to take several weeks and photos of both the process and finished products will be posted here.
Secondly, students began their myBlueprint portfolio project today. myBlueprint is a program being used for graduation credits in all Langley secondary school and they also have an elementary version. Throughout the school year, students will use myBlueprint to build a portfolio describing many aspects of their learning profile: their cultural background, interests, learning styles as well as reflecting upon classroom activities and assignments. A notice was sent home a few weeks ago with instructions for how parents and students can log in to myBlueprint at home. The students REALLY enjoyed exploring the program today and began building their portfolio. Be sure to check it out at http://myblueprint.ca Login information was found on the information notice sent home and found below.
That's all for now. Happy Halloween!

The blog has also been updated with the new spelling words for the week. Click HERE if you need them. Also, an important notice went home today as well. Starting next week, students will be introduced to myBlueprint, a program being used in many schools across B.C. The notice explains the purpose behind our class using the tool and I have attached a copy of the notice here incase any notices get "lost" in transit to home. This is my first year using the program, which is getting great reviews from other classes here at James Kennedy that have started using it, and I look forward to learning about the possibilities this program gives our students to share and reflect upon their learning.
Also, FYI, a notice home about our upcoming Halloween party will be coming home tomorrow and I will be adding more photos to the art gallery. I have also updated the "Notices/Important Info" tab found at the top of the page.

You may have heard from your child on Monday that I was not going to be in for the rest of the week. Unfortunately, my daughter contracted Pink Eye and we both had to be quarantined for several days. Luckily, I didn't contract Pink Eye but ended up contracting the flu instead. So it's been a bit of a rough week in our household. I'm sorry for the lack of updates regarding the Week at a Glance and spelling list. I have not had a chance to check with the TTOCs to see how the week went or the gather the work that was completed. So the Week at a Glance will be delayed; I'll be sending it out on Monday. I may also be delayed in marking and sending home the spelling tests. My apologies but it may take me some time to catch up on the week's work. Important to note: Monday is an early dismissal due to a collaboration afternoon for the teachers. Students will be dismissed at 1:30pm. I hope you and your family have a wonderful, healthy weekend. Mrs. Vieira Monday, Oct 16th

Please wear gym shoes - The Great Shakeout (Earthquake Drill) approx. 10am - Spelling Test (due to Pro D Day on Friday) Friday, Oct 20th - Pro D Day. No school for students Have a great weekend. Mrs. Vieira I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving weekend and are not too full of turkey. Students were sent home with their new spelling lists today. It's another short week which means only 4 days to study. You can find this weeks list HERE. Also, I wanted to share with your our latest art project. Our art projects this term will all be inspired by famous artists or artwork. This time around, the students learned about Edvard Munch and what may have inspired his most famous painting; The Scream. Poor Edvard Munch lived a very sad life and was not a very happy man, which may have led him to creating The Scream. We decided to do our own version of the scream where we were inspired by the swirling, abstract background but used photos of ourselves screaming. Check them out HERE. Have a great week. I hope everyone is having a good Friday. The teachers at JKE are all hard at work at school learning and discussing the new B.C. curriculum. I wanted to share something we have been discussing a lot in class: expectations. I like to think that I have very high, but realistic expectations for my students. I've noticed that some students in class are completing their assignments extremely quickly and doing the bare minimum of what I have asked. So I've started being very clear and explicit with what my expectations are and what they look like. On the report cards, you and your students will see 4 categories: Not meeting expectations, minimally meeting expectations, fully meeting expectations and exceeding expectations. To make things a bit simplier, Mrs. Anderson and I use a 4 point scale for these points. Here is a picture of a poster we have in our classroom. We had a detailed discussion about what each of them looks like. How doing everything Mrs. Vieira or Mrs. Anderson asks you to do would get a "3" or a "fully meets expectations". That means you are doing everything that we would expect a grade 3 student to able to do. That's a very good thing! As we do more projects and assignments in class, I will continue to impress upon the students my expectations and what each stage looks like. Here is an example we came up for a journaling assignment: Self-assessment is a BIG part of the new B.C. curriculum and we will soon be asking students to self-assess their own work once they become more familiar with what is expected of them as a grade 3 student. You can look forwards to many proud students who can't wait to show off what they can accomplish in class. :)
Have a great long weekend, Mrs. Vieira Monday, Oct 9th

Mrs. Vieira Hi, my name is Ally Angell and I am the Room Parent for your children in Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Vieira’s class this year. There is a high likelihood our kids have been in class together over the years, but if not, my son is Eli, and I have 3 other children gr.7, gr.5 and age 4. I am at the school every day so I look forward to meeting you and/or your kids, if we have not yet met :) Most communication will come from our teachers and via the class website (I’ll keep emails to a minimum so you’re not bombarded!) but there are a few things to pass along or organize throughout the year, which is when you’ll hear from me :) Please email me at [email protected] with your child’s name, your name and your email address and also if you would like to be included in the class email list. Thanks so much! Ally |
