This week, our school was lucky enough to welcome lacrosse coaches who wanted to come to our school to give our students a taste of the sport. Our class was one of the lucky classes to get 30 minutes with these excellent coaches. They taught us a bit about the history of the game, how to hold the stick and some basic skills. We had a blast! I love lacrosse and I was really happy to see our students get a chance to experience parts of the game. You never know, maybe it inspired a new passion in someone. :)

Mrs. Vieira Next week is Literacy Week at JKE and we have a couple of fun events planned to encourage and support our student's love of reading Tuesday, its Dress as a Book Character Day! It's our latest Spirit Day and I encourage you all to have some fun with it. I'll be dressing up as well but I'm currently keeping my costume a secret ;) Also, Madame Gammel created a fun Bingo card to encourage our students to have their families participate in some literacy activities. Just like Bingo, you try to complete as many activities as you can and when you have completed a line, bring the paper back to school WITH A PARENT SIGNATURE and students will be entered in to a draw to win a book! So make sure to bring it back by Friday. Also, our class will be participating in some fun reading activities within the classroom to make reading just a touch more interesting this week. ;)
Have a great weekend Mrs. Vieira If you're child has been attending JKE for a few years, then you might have already attending at POPS session. JKE staff will be hosting the first POPs session of 2018 on Tuesday, February, 20th from 5:30pm - 7:00pm. On Friday, the following form went home.
My apologies for it going home so close to the due date. Due to staff illnesses and absences, the deadline for returning the form has been extended to FRIDAY, JAN 23rd. POPS stands for Parents of Primary Students and is a free, evening workshop where parents of primary students can attend to learn some tips and tricks about different topics that impact their child's learning. This months POPS topic is: Literacy. Parents are able to engage and discuss with teachers about the topic, engage in fun activities to support learning and everyone gets a "grab bag" to go home with. Plus, we end the evening with an ice cream sundae bar. :) YUM! Due to popularity and the need to provide ice cream supplies, pre-registration is required. If you would like to attend, please return the above form to myself or Mrs. Anderson by FRIDAY. Also, if you are able to contribute ice-cream supplies towards the sundae bar, it would be greatly appreciate. Look forward to seeing you there, Mrs. Vieira Monday, Jan 22nd

Mrs. Vieira You may have already heard from your excited students that they received their literature circle books this past week and wondered what the heck they were talking about. Literature circles is my version of Guided Reading. Each term (usually twice a term), I present students with 6-8 books I have chosen of various different levels. I describe each book to them briefly and each child gets to choose which book they would like to read. They are encouraged to choose a book that is an appropriate level of difficulty for them. This month, the books chosen were: Socks by Beverly Cleary, Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown, Runaway Ralph by Beverly Cleary, Good Grief, Third Grade by Colleen O'Shaughnessy McKenna, and Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater. Students were placed in the different groups based upon their reading level, their desired choices and how many books were available. Each literature circle group will meet on the same day, except if school is not in session or if another event conflicts with that time. Then they will be rescheduled for a different day/time. Each book has been separated into 4 sections and we will meet for 4 weeks to discussion each section of the book. Students are NOT ALLOWED TO READ AHEAD IN THE BOOK. That may potentially ruin the book for the other students. During a literature circle meeting, we spend our time discussing various parts of the book: our favourite parts, what surprised us, predictions of what will happen next, etc. It's very similar to an adult version of a book club. It a less formal way for students to engage with books and in my experience, students really enjoy this format and get a deeper understand of the book that they are reading. In order to prepared for discussion, students must come to the meeting with that weeks section already read. We will not be reading the book during our meetings. It will be expected that you have already read the section and are prepared to talk about it. Students must also come to the meeting with a simple question that they will "test" the memory of their classmates with. The answer needs to be found within the book (e.g. no opinion or predictions) but need to test the memory of the people who read the book. Examples of good questions: What's the name of the camp that Ralph runs away to? What is the last name of Sock's family? To help students and family remember, dates for literature circle meetings can be found on the side whiteboard in the classroom and also on the blog HERE. I have created a page where all literature circle groups are named, with which student is in each group, their meeting dates and sections that needed to be read. I hope you find this helpful. I always look forward to Literature Circles and I hope most of the students come to look forward to it as well. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me or come see me before or after school. Mrs. Vieira **You may notice some changes to the schedule**

Mrs. Vieira It's come to my attention that several cases of head lice have been confirmed in various classes around the school. Even though we have not currently had any confirmed cases of head lice in Division 14, that I know of, I feel it's a good opportunity to pass along some tips and reminders. Head lice do not discriminate between race, gender or socio-economic status. In fact, they LOVE clean hair. It's important to regularly check your child's hair for both eggs and nits. They are often found near the scalp as you part the hair. Part the hair and look near the root for nits (eggs) stuck onto the hair. Nits are tiny, oval shaped and cemented to one side of the hair shaft. They are not white but rather amber, grey, cream or even black in colour. A great resource for more details about checking and treating lice can be found at Lice911.com Great ways to prevent your child from getting lice: 1) Girls should wear their hair back, tied in a ponytail or in braids 2) Do not share hats, brushes, combs 3) Use hair gel, hair spray or mousse. Lice do not like hair with product in it. 4) Check your child's hair each week for signs. Thank you for your consideration. Mrs. Vieira Monday, Jan 8th
