Better late than never ;) Here are some photos from our field trip last Wednesday. It was a great morning spent listening to stories, singing songs, drumming and dancing. All students got to take home a special stone with an Aboriginal symbol on it. Thank you to all members of the Kwantlen First Nations for the special experience. As well, photos of our latest art project is up on the blog. Click HERE for a shortcut to the page.
Enjoy! Mrs. Vieira

Please bring object/item for sharing - Math Quiz - Orders for Frozen Food/Neufeld Farms Due Friday, Mar 1=2nd - Diversity and Respect Week ends Thanks for your patience. Mrs. Vieira Today, we were visited by the famous Maple Man. Being new to JKE, I didn't quite know what to expect but seasoned teachers and students had told me to expect something special. I was not disappointed. Rene Turmel described how he still makes maple syrup the old fashioned way on his maple farm in Quebec. He showed us an amazing video that had each step of the collection, cooking and even eating of his famous maple taffy. He then entertained us with several traditional games and dances and finally, gave everyone a sample of maple taffy. It was so much fun! Also, two important notices went home today with students. First, next week our school is celebrating Diversity and Respect Week and one of the events we will be participating in is Identity Day on Thursday, March 1st. Students are asked to bring or make an item that represents an important part of their identity. This could be a photograph, an article of clothing, an item or maybe students want to make a poster or diorama. Whatever it is, we just want it to be something special that they would like to share with not only our class, but a few other classes participating in the school. On Wednesday, March 1st, we ask students to bring the items to school so we can take a picture of them. Then, on Thursday, March 2nd, we will have an opportunity for students to share their item with their classmates and have an assembly where photos of their special items are shown to the whole school. The goal is to recognize and celebrate those differences that make us special. Further reminders and information about this event will be sent home in the upcoming week. A notice was sent home describing the event. A copy can be found below.
Secondly, Division 14 is going swimming! As a reward for quietly reading during literature circles and as an opportunity to practice a different kind of exercise, on Tuesday, March 6th, our class will be walking to the Walnut Grove Community Centre in the afternoon to go swimming. This is an optional field trip. Students do not have to swim if they don't want to but they will walk up to the community centre with us. The cost is only $1. A copy of the field trip form can be downloaded below:
Our next spirit day is quickly approaching and our class, along with our buddy class of Mrs. Kelly's kindergarteners, were in charge of making the posters. We worked with our little buddies to create two different posters: one for Pink Shirt Day which is on Feb 28th and one for Diversity and Respect Week which we will be celebrating all week next week from Feb 26th to Mar 2nd. They turned out great! Here are a few examples: Also, some important information regarding our field trip was emailed out yesterday. If you didn't get it, didn't see it or have forgotten, here it is again:
1) We are leaving at 8:50am, immediately after attendance. Please ensure your child is not late. 2) It is suppose to be quite chilly on Wednesday so please dress your child for the weather. I believe the activities are all indoor but students may be outside at times. Better safe than sorry. 3) Students will need a pocket snack. This is a snack that is easily eaten while on the go (e.g. no utensils needed, easy to eat, etc) 4) Students will be back by lunch time. 5) If your child still requires a booster seat, please have your child bring it with them. If you have an questions or concerns, please feel free to email me. And if you have volunteered to drive, THANK YOU! Mrs. Vieira Monday, Feb 19th

Mrs. Vieira Happy Lunar New Year! It's been an exciting week in Division 14 and a VERY busy one. The students had a lot of fun with Valentines Day and I was sorry I missed it. I came back to a Valentine's box full of thoughtful cards and little treats. I'm very, very grateful and thankful for such thoughtful students. Thursday we had some fun with our buddies. Instead of doing an activity in their classroom, they came to us! We showed them around the classroom (the guinea pigs were a big hit) and then we showed them some of our favourite GoNoodle videos. The Rollarcoaster was a big hit :) Finally, on Friday, we had two special events: Chinese New Year and the Rivermen came for a visit. We learned about Chinese New Year, discovered that our lunar calendar animal is either an ox or a rat depending upon which month you were born in and had a blast writing new years messages in Mandarin on Chinese scroll. They turned out great! As an end to an already busy day, then we got the chance to attend an assembly where the Langley Rivermen, our local hockey team, issued a reading challenge to many of the classes in our school. They challenged all the students in the gym to read for at least 20 minutes each and every day for the next 2 week. They were given a reading log (I've attached a downloadable copy below) and each student is responsible for tracking their progress. At the end of the two weeks, all the students who read for at least 20 minutes each day will be entered into a draw. The winners will win their entire class tickets to a Rivermen game! Plus, as an extra bonus, the top students with the most minutes of reading will receive Rivermen merchandise! What an incentive! Make sure to track those minutes!
What a busy week! Hope you have a wonderful weekend with your families.

Mrs. Vieira Division 14 is heading out of town! On Wednesday, February 21st, our class will be travelling to the Kwantlen first nations in Fort Langley to visit their long house. Click HERE to see a news article about their grand opening back in 2013. Several classes from JKE will be going together. We will be leaving first thing in the morning and will spend the morning on a guided tour of the long house, being introduced to stories and presentations about the Kwantlen First Nations. We will return during lunch time. We are very excited because last term, our class did an inquiry project where we researched many different first nations groups around Canada so this field trip will expand upon our knowledge base. Below is a scan of the information page that was sent home on Monday. Here is a downloadable version of the full form.
The field trip costs only $8 because we are asking for parent volunteers to drive our class to the long house. If you are able to drive, please fill out the form on the field trip form and also, a volunteer driving form in the office. This form MUST be filled out before the date of the field trip. We ask that all field trip forms be returned by Friday, Feb 16th.
