Today, we were visited by the famous Maple Man. Being new to JKE, I didn't quite know what to expect but seasoned teachers and students had told me to expect something special. I was not disappointed. Rene Turmel described how he still makes maple syrup the old fashioned way on his maple farm in Quebec. He showed us an amazing video that had each step of the collection, cooking and even eating of his famous maple taffy. He then entertained us with several traditional games and dances and finally, gave everyone a sample of maple taffy. It was so much fun! Also, two important notices went home today with students. First, next week our school is celebrating Diversity and Respect Week and one of the events we will be participating in is Identity Day on Thursday, March 1st. Students are asked to bring or make an item that represents an important part of their identity. This could be a photograph, an article of clothing, an item or maybe students want to make a poster or diorama. Whatever it is, we just want it to be something special that they would like to share with not only our class, but a few other classes participating in the school. On Wednesday, March 1st, we ask students to bring the items to school so we can take a picture of them. Then, on Thursday, March 2nd, we will have an opportunity for students to share their item with their classmates and have an assembly where photos of their special items are shown to the whole school. The goal is to recognize and celebrate those differences that make us special. Further reminders and information about this event will be sent home in the upcoming week. A notice was sent home describing the event. A copy can be found below.
Secondly, Division 14 is going swimming! As a reward for quietly reading during literature circles and as an opportunity to practice a different kind of exercise, on Tuesday, March 6th, our class will be walking to the Walnut Grove Community Centre in the afternoon to go swimming. This is an optional field trip. Students do not have to swim if they don't want to but they will walk up to the community centre with us. The cost is only $1. A copy of the field trip form can be downloaded below:
