Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our poetry slam today! We actually ran out of chairs, so many families members attended! The students were so excited to share their poems they have created this term. They did such a wonderful job! Here are some some photos from our slam!
A big THANK YOU for everyone who was able to come by for Student Led Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday. It was a really great opportunity for our students to show off everything that they have worked so hard on this term. I hope you were as impressed as Mrs. Anderson and I are by their work. In case you missed it during Student Led Conferences, I wanted to share with you some photos of the latest project students completed in Social Studies. Last term, students learned how to research and take notes and learned all about a specific Aboriginal culture in Canada. This term, students started the term by learning about a different Aboriginal group than they originally did their project on, then researched all about a different Aboriginal group from a different location around the world. Finally, students had to compare and contrast the two different Aboriginal groups using a Venn Diagram. I was VERY impressed by the level of thoughtfulness and thoroughness demonstrated by many of the students during this project. They were very excited when they found out two groups that lived so far away from each other, could have some things in common. They were equally fascinated by some of the cultural differences they found. Did you know that the Qucheua people from South America traditionally eat guinea pigs?!?!? Good thing Mikey and Boomer don't live there! As always, feel free to come by Division 14 to see what's happening.
We had quite the adventure on Monday. Unfortunately, Mrs. Anderson had to stay home on Monday and miss our field trip. But fortunately, I was able to come in instead. The Loafing Shed Glass Studio was located in Port Kells on The Parkes property. The artist showed us 3 different methods of creating class art. First, he showed us how to make an under the sea themed paper weight by repeatedly adding liquid class to different kinds of class bobbles. It was fanscinating to watch him shape the hot ball of semi-liquid class using just a steel rod and wet newspaper! Next, the artist showed us how to create a candy dish using a blowing technique. We were all really surprised by how quickly the shape changed. He made it look easy but we know that that skill took 30 years to master. Finally, he showed us how quickly he can make something like a marble. We have a lot of students in our class who use marbles during free time to play a version of beyblades they created so they were really excited about this. They were a bit disappointed when they asked if they could have it and they found out how expensive they were. But they were pretty excited to find out that Mrs. Vieira purchased one for the class. :) It’s was a really amazing field trip, one that I’m very lucky I got to attend. Mrs. Anderson was REALLY disappointed that she missed it. Some of the students even commented that it was one of the best field trips they had every been on. Feel free to check out their website:

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Vieira at [email protected] Hope to see you there Division 14 More specifically, financial literacy. In the new B.C. curriculum, we are moving away from simple identification of currency and your basic adding and subtracting of sums. The new curriculum uses the term financial literacy for a reason: we want our students to become skills with all aspects of money, especially how to earn, spend and save it. To help students practice these skills, I created a classroom economy that all students will be participating in for the next several weeks. We discussed the terms economy and currency and talk about what their experiences with money has been like so far. When I told the students we were going to be creating our own class economy system, they got very , very excited. First we discussed how they would earn their money. Every two weeks, they will receive a paycheque. The base salary they will all receive for their jobs of being students is $20 a week, to be paid out twice monthly. Then we discussed other ways students could earn more money. Students were excited to learn that extra work earned extra pay. Students were each given a bank account in the class bank to keep their money safe. Next, we discussed how they could spend their money. Our class will have the opportunity to go shopping once a week on Fridays. I have provided numerous items that might tempt them; from coupons allowing them tech time with the iPad to being able to choose any desk in the classroom. There are also items they can purchase such as school supplies, toys and snacks. Each student will be responsible for keeping track of their money by using chequebooks supplied my Mrs. Vieira. In these chequebooks, students will record any money they have both earned and spent. Each week, they chequebooks will be handed into Mrs. Vieira for double checking and before payday for paycheque to be calculated. Monday was the class's first opportunity to go shopping and a vast majority of the class spent most of their money. Some spent all their money on one item, and other spent most of their money on several smaller items. It will be very interesting to see how shopping patterns change and adapt as we go through our financial literacy unit, especially when we start talking about responsible spending and saving. Students who spend all their money this week might be a bit disappointed when a sale occurs, they have no money left and payday is still a week away. :)
This is my first time trying a classroom economy and I'm as excited as the students to see how it goes. If you have anything at home that you would like to donate as an item to be added to our classroom store, I would be very grateful. So far, all items have been bought using my own money but I think this experience is well worth the cost. I will keep you updated with how well our classroom economy and financial literacy unit is going. Have a great day Mrs. Vieira Monday, March 5th

This has been a very busy but exciting week here at JKE. We have been celebrating Diversity and Respect Week and when you look at what is happening around the world right now, these two things certainly need to be understood and celebrated a little bit more.
We started the week with an assembly talking about the goals for the week. Each class was to discuss/celebrate diversity and respect in different ways. Division 14 created a special bullitun board showing some of our cultural backgrounds. We discovered that our class represents many countries around the world.
We read stories and had some really great class discussions.
Thursday was a really busy day because it was Identity Day! Each student brought in an item or object that represented something special to them. We then rotated throughout the school with various different classes showing off our items and looked at other peoples. It was amazing to see how interested the students were in learning more about their peers. They asked great questions, made personal connections and had lots of compliments to give. It was very special to watch.
We ended the day and week with a special assembly where we watched classes perform, sang songs and even got to see a special slideshow made by Mrs. Roberts showcasing many photos taken of the special events and activities done this week. What a great way to wrap up the week.
One special thing I want to share with you from the assembly was an Aboriginal rapper by the name of Supaman. He uses both rap and his Aboriginal culture to create songs and videos that talk about some very important topics. The following video was shown during the assembly and I wanted to share it all with you as well.
Although Diversity and Respect Week is coming to a close, we will continue to discuss these topics throughout the remainder of the school year. They are extremely important lessons and topics for students to talk about as they grow to be the future change-makers in our country.
