I hope everyone is having a good Friday. The teachers at JKE are all hard at work at school learning and discussing the new B.C. curriculum. I wanted to share something we have been discussing a lot in class: expectations. I like to think that I have very high, but realistic expectations for my students. I've noticed that some students in class are completing their assignments extremely quickly and doing the bare minimum of what I have asked. So I've started being very clear and explicit with what my expectations are and what they look like. On the report cards, you and your students will see 4 categories: Not meeting expectations, minimally meeting expectations, fully meeting expectations and exceeding expectations. To make things a bit simplier, Mrs. Anderson and I use a 4 point scale for these points. Here is a picture of a poster we have in our classroom. We had a detailed discussion about what each of them looks like. How doing everything Mrs. Vieira or Mrs. Anderson asks you to do would get a "3" or a "fully meets expectations". That means you are doing everything that we would expect a grade 3 student to able to do. That's a very good thing! As we do more projects and assignments in class, I will continue to impress upon the students my expectations and what each stage looks like. Here is an example we came up for a journaling assignment: Self-assessment is a BIG part of the new B.C. curriculum and we will soon be asking students to self-assess their own work once they become more familiar with what is expected of them as a grade 3 student. You can look forwards to many proud students who can't wait to show off what they can accomplish in class. :)
Have a great long weekend, Mrs. Vieira

All about Mrs. VieiraI'm new to JKE and new to the school district but I've been a teacher in B.C. since 2008. I love art, animals and my family, which includes my daughter who is 1 year old. Archives
