More specifically, financial literacy. In the new B.C. curriculum, we are moving away from simple identification of currency and your basic adding and subtracting of sums. The new curriculum uses the term financial literacy for a reason: we want our students to become skills with all aspects of money, especially how to earn, spend and save it. To help students practice these skills, I created a classroom economy that all students will be participating in for the next several weeks. We discussed the terms economy and currency and talk about what their experiences with money has been like so far. When I told the students we were going to be creating our own class economy system, they got very , very excited. First we discussed how they would earn their money. Every two weeks, they will receive a paycheque. The base salary they will all receive for their jobs of being students is $20 a week, to be paid out twice monthly. Then we discussed other ways students could earn more money. Students were excited to learn that extra work earned extra pay. Students were each given a bank account in the class bank to keep their money safe. Next, we discussed how they could spend their money. Our class will have the opportunity to go shopping once a week on Fridays. I have provided numerous items that might tempt them; from coupons allowing them tech time with the iPad to being able to choose any desk in the classroom. There are also items they can purchase such as school supplies, toys and snacks. Each student will be responsible for keeping track of their money by using chequebooks supplied my Mrs. Vieira. In these chequebooks, students will record any money they have both earned and spent. Each week, they chequebooks will be handed into Mrs. Vieira for double checking and before payday for paycheque to be calculated. Monday was the class's first opportunity to go shopping and a vast majority of the class spent most of their money. Some spent all their money on one item, and other spent most of their money on several smaller items. It will be very interesting to see how shopping patterns change and adapt as we go through our financial literacy unit, especially when we start talking about responsible spending and saving. Students who spend all their money this week might be a bit disappointed when a sale occurs, they have no money left and payday is still a week away. :)
This is my first time trying a classroom economy and I'm as excited as the students to see how it goes. If you have anything at home that you would like to donate as an item to be added to our classroom store, I would be very grateful. So far, all items have been bought using my own money but I think this experience is well worth the cost. I will keep you updated with how well our classroom economy and financial literacy unit is going. Have a great day Mrs. Vieira

This has been a very busy but exciting week here at JKE. We have been celebrating Diversity and Respect Week and when you look at what is happening around the world right now, these two things certainly need to be understood and celebrated a little bit more.
We started the week with an assembly talking about the goals for the week. Each class was to discuss/celebrate diversity and respect in different ways. Division 14 created a special bullitun board showing some of our cultural backgrounds. We discovered that our class represents many countries around the world.
We read stories and had some really great class discussions.
Thursday was a really busy day because it was Identity Day! Each student brought in an item or object that represented something special to them. We then rotated throughout the school with various different classes showing off our items and looked at other peoples. It was amazing to see how interested the students were in learning more about their peers. They asked great questions, made personal connections and had lots of compliments to give. It was very special to watch.
We ended the day and week with a special assembly where we watched classes perform, sang songs and even got to see a special slideshow made by Mrs. Roberts showcasing many photos taken of the special events and activities done this week. What a great way to wrap up the week.
One special thing I want to share with you from the assembly was an Aboriginal rapper by the name of Supaman. He uses both rap and his Aboriginal culture to create songs and videos that talk about some very important topics. The following video was shown during the assembly and I wanted to share it all with you as well.
Although Diversity and Respect Week is coming to a close, we will continue to discuss these topics throughout the remainder of the school year. They are extremely important lessons and topics for students to talk about as they grow to be the future change-makers in our country.
Mrs. Vieira Better late than never ;) Here are some photos from our field trip last Wednesday. It was a great morning spent listening to stories, singing songs, drumming and dancing. All students got to take home a special stone with an Aboriginal symbol on it. Thank you to all members of the Kwantlen First Nations for the special experience. As well, photos of our latest art project is up on the blog. Click HERE for a shortcut to the page.
Enjoy! Mrs. Vieira Wednesday, Feb 28th

Please bring object/item for sharing - Math Quiz - Orders for Frozen Food/Neufeld Farms Due Friday, Mar 1=2nd - Diversity and Respect Week ends Thanks for your patience. Mrs. Vieira Today, we were visited by the famous Maple Man. Being new to JKE, I didn't quite know what to expect but seasoned teachers and students had told me to expect something special. I was not disappointed. Rene Turmel described how he still makes maple syrup the old fashioned way on his maple farm in Quebec. He showed us an amazing video that had each step of the collection, cooking and even eating of his famous maple taffy. He then entertained us with several traditional games and dances and finally, gave everyone a sample of maple taffy. It was so much fun! Also, two important notices went home today with students. First, next week our school is celebrating Diversity and Respect Week and one of the events we will be participating in is Identity Day on Thursday, March 1st. Students are asked to bring or make an item that represents an important part of their identity. This could be a photograph, an article of clothing, an item or maybe students want to make a poster or diorama. Whatever it is, we just want it to be something special that they would like to share with not only our class, but a few other classes participating in the school. On Wednesday, March 1st, we ask students to bring the items to school so we can take a picture of them. Then, on Thursday, March 2nd, we will have an opportunity for students to share their item with their classmates and have an assembly where photos of their special items are shown to the whole school. The goal is to recognize and celebrate those differences that make us special. Further reminders and information about this event will be sent home in the upcoming week. A notice was sent home describing the event. A copy can be found below.
Secondly, Division 14 is going swimming! As a reward for quietly reading during literature circles and as an opportunity to practice a different kind of exercise, on Tuesday, March 6th, our class will be walking to the Walnut Grove Community Centre in the afternoon to go swimming. This is an optional field trip. Students do not have to swim if they don't want to but they will walk up to the community centre with us. The cost is only $1. A copy of the field trip form can be downloaded below:
Our next spirit day is quickly approaching and our class, along with our buddy class of Mrs. Kelly's kindergarteners, were in charge of making the posters. We worked with our little buddies to create two different posters: one for Pink Shirt Day which is on Feb 28th and one for Diversity and Respect Week which we will be celebrating all week next week from Feb 26th to Mar 2nd. They turned out great! Here are a few examples: Also, some important information regarding our field trip was emailed out yesterday. If you didn't get it, didn't see it or have forgotten, here it is again:
1) We are leaving at 8:50am, immediately after attendance. Please ensure your child is not late. 2) It is suppose to be quite chilly on Wednesday so please dress your child for the weather. I believe the activities are all indoor but students may be outside at times. Better safe than sorry. 3) Students will need a pocket snack. This is a snack that is easily eaten while on the go (e.g. no utensils needed, easy to eat, etc) 4) Students will be back by lunch time. 5) If your child still requires a booster seat, please have your child bring it with them. If you have an questions or concerns, please feel free to email me. And if you have volunteered to drive, THANK YOU! Mrs. Vieira Monday, Feb 19th

Mrs. Vieira Happy Lunar New Year! It's been an exciting week in Division 14 and a VERY busy one. The students had a lot of fun with Valentines Day and I was sorry I missed it. I came back to a Valentine's box full of thoughtful cards and little treats. I'm very, very grateful and thankful for such thoughtful students. Thursday we had some fun with our buddies. Instead of doing an activity in their classroom, they came to us! We showed them around the classroom (the guinea pigs were a big hit) and then we showed them some of our favourite GoNoodle videos. The Rollarcoaster was a big hit :) Finally, on Friday, we had two special events: Chinese New Year and the Rivermen came for a visit. We learned about Chinese New Year, discovered that our lunar calendar animal is either an ox or a rat depending upon which month you were born in and had a blast writing new years messages in Mandarin on Chinese scroll. They turned out great! As an end to an already busy day, then we got the chance to attend an assembly where the Langley Rivermen, our local hockey team, issued a reading challenge to many of the classes in our school. They challenged all the students in the gym to read for at least 20 minutes each and every day for the next 2 week. They were given a reading log (I've attached a downloadable copy below) and each student is responsible for tracking their progress. At the end of the two weeks, all the students who read for at least 20 minutes each day will be entered into a draw. The winners will win their entire class tickets to a Rivermen game! Plus, as an extra bonus, the top students with the most minutes of reading will receive Rivermen merchandise! What an incentive! Make sure to track those minutes!
What a busy week! Hope you have a wonderful weekend with your families.
