Exciting things happening in Division 14 :) Yesterday, the students got an extra bonus day with Mrs. Vieira as Mrs. Anderson was away. It was a lot of fun teaching Mrs. Anderson's math. The students are doing a Geometry unit and have been learning about polygons. After the students taught Mrs. Vieira what a polygon was, they read a story (The Greedy Triangle), did a scavenger hunt for polygons around the classroom and then got a chance to create their very own Polygon Creature. We developed some criteria and the students were encouraged to be as creative as possible with this project. The resulting creatures were both adorable and terrifying! I was surprised how many of them dined on humans! The students creativity was certainly flowing with this project and they really enjoyed it. Today, the students started another project that they are excited about. In Language Arts/Social Studies, students have been learning about Aboriginal stories. We have read many stories from various Aboriginal cultures and have talked about their defining qualities. What makes an Aboriginal story different from a Fairytale? Students also learned about plot lines and the different parts a story needs to make it interesting and exciting. Now we are practicing writing our own stories. Today, each student in the class wrote down two nouns on a piece of paper. They could be a person, a place or a thing. Then, Mrs. Vieira drew 3 sets of 3 for story inspiration. The students got to chose which set they wanted to work with and were given the instructions that they HAD to include those three nouns in their story. The students were very inspired and excited to write their stories. So excited in fact, that a few asked if they could take it home to keep working on it. So some of your children may be coming home with homework by their own choice! These stories are due Thursday and I can't wait to read them! Keep checking back for more updates on what's happening in Division 14.

All about Mrs. VieiraI'm new to JKE and new to the school district but I've been a teacher in B.C. since 2008. I love art, animals and my family, which includes my daughter who is 1 year old. Archives
