One of our final projects of the year has been the creation of Aboriginal Inspired Stories. This project combined curriculum standards from both Language Arts, Social Studies and STEM.
Students first learned the defining features that make Aboriginal stories unique and read many from our local Indigenous groups. They then were tasked with taking those elements and creating their own creation story. They had to attempt to explain some kind of natural phenomenon, such as the wind, the seasons or why an animal had a particular feature. Students could do this by themselves or with a partner. The stories they created were PHENOMENAL and in keeping with the oral traditions of Indigenous people, instead of writing down the final version of the stories, students recorded themselves reading their stories. We used the app Explains Everything to create visuals to go along with our stories and then students recorded their voices reading it aloud. On Friday, all the students shared their final projects and they were AMAZING! Unfortunately, this blog will not allow me to upload the videos but all the videos have been saved to our class's Google Docs account. Go to Google.ca and in the top right corner, sign in under our classroom account [email protected] . Students should know how to do this and they should also know the password. If they have forgotten, feel free to email me at [email protected] for the password. Once there, go into GoogleDrive, find the folder of your child or their partner and you can view the videos there. They have worked so hard on these and I wanted to make sure that parents could see all their hard work. If you have any trouble viewing them, please let me know and I'll try my best to make sure you can view the video. Have a great day Mrs. Vieira.

On Tuesday, we ended our money unit. Students were very happy to hear that they would continue earning a paycheque and shopping in the story but we will be moving on to other units now. But before we did, I asked the students to complete a self-reflection for me. This is the first time I have done this unit and it's important for me to receive feedback with how well the students got the concepts that were the units Big Ideas. I was BLOWN away by how thoughtful and meaningful some of the reflections were and I HAD to share them with you. Here are some of the highlights from the self-reflections: Before starting this unit, my attitude and/or understanding of money was:
My favourite part of the unit was:
My least favourite part of the unit was:
The thing that surprised me the most was:
Give me at least one example of how grew in one of the core competencies:
As you can see, I believe this unit was extremely successful in learning not just how to count, recognize and add money but the key factors in building a strong sense of Financial Literacy: having a deeper understanding of earning, spending and saving money and the factors that go into each of those. I'm so proud of the students and it's been one of my favourite Math units to teach so far. I hope they have enjoyed it as much as I have. Monday, May 7th

It was a lot of fun teaching Mrs. Anderson's math. The students are doing a Geometry unit and have been learning about polygons. After the students taught Mrs. Vieira what a polygon was, they read a story (The Greedy Triangle), did a scavenger hunt for polygons around the classroom and then got a chance to create their very own Polygon Creature. We developed some criteria and the students were encouraged to be as creative as possible with this project. The resulting creatures were both adorable and terrifying! I was surprised how many of them dined on humans! The students creativity was certainly flowing with this project and they really enjoyed it. Today, the students started another project that they are excited about. In Language Arts/Social Studies, students have been learning about Aboriginal stories. We have read many stories from various Aboriginal cultures and have talked about their defining qualities. What makes an Aboriginal story different from a Fairytale? Students also learned about plot lines and the different parts a story needs to make it interesting and exciting. Now we are practicing writing our own stories. Today, each student in the class wrote down two nouns on a piece of paper. They could be a person, a place or a thing. Then, Mrs. Vieira drew 3 sets of 3 for story inspiration. The students got to chose which set they wanted to work with and were given the instructions that they HAD to include those three nouns in their story. The students were very inspired and excited to write their stories. So excited in fact, that a few asked if they could take it home to keep working on it. So some of your children may be coming home with homework by their own choice! These stories are due Thursday and I can't wait to read them! Keep checking back for more updates on what's happening in Division 14.
Today was an exciting day: not only was it payday but it was Jump Rope for Heart! We were very lucky to skip first thing in the morning before it got too hot. Our class did a great job skipping with their little buddies. They were such wonderful leaders and role models and they kept great energy all the way until the end.
